Awkward. Never thought I'd make that mistake...
And of course it happens while talking with the only American I know. Luckily, later that evening she said - after the conversation suddenly faced a hypothetical invasion of Europe by the US in which I would finally find a use for all my theoretical strategic and combat knowledge, perhaps by infiltrating the invading army, posing as a lost grunt - she then said my vocabulary was too extensive for me to pass as a soldier. Silly, and maybe a hollow compliment, probably not, but still also a very functional thing to say (to me, that is, not in general, me thinks). Small scale social fabric is really quite as fascinating as the larger societal weave.
But now I'll be silent.
